I'm thinking of writing a paper in which I evaluate government reports by counting the number of words in each report divided by the number of authors on the report. I will then help readers visualize my results by color-coding this metric onto a map of all the agencies in D.C. How very useful that will be, and what a lot we will learn from it. I just wonder how I will get paid....

Certainly, you can't deny -- although some in the anti-patent crowd still do -- that the potential for profit serves, and will always serve, as a major incentive for innovation. The patent industry is now such a significant engine of U.S. economic growth that it's about as American as apple pie.
